Senior Materials Scientist

About us

Clairity Technology was founded to develop technology and solutions for climate change. We create scalable and low-cost technology and systems for carbon dioxide removal by performing direct air capture of carbon dioxide.

Job description

As a materials scientist at Clairity Technology, you will oversee R&D development of sorbents and support materials for direct air capture of carbon dioxide. You will work to set up a lab from scratch, including spec’ing and purchasing all required lab equipment and tooling. You will have in-depth knowledge of modern synthetic organic chemistry and material properties, especially porous materials, experience in material characterization (e.g. TGA, XRD, BET surface area analysis) and how to interpret such results, contribute to systems level designs, and oversee external vendors to aid in sorbent R&D.

You will oversee all aspects of your projects, including initial requirements gathering, feasibility studies, full system design, purchasing and procurement, project management, manufacturing, contractor management, installation, and activation.

  • Oversee R&D efforts related to materials and sorbent development.

  • Create a roadmap for sorbent development, testing, and improvement strategies.

  • Create a roadmap for sorbent support development, testing, and improvement strategies.

  • Set up materials R&D lab from scratch.

  • Perform synthesis to create new materials, as necessary.

  • Execute tests to understand materials performance and characterization.

  • Data analysis and reporting.

  • Interface with vendors and external parties as necessary for project completion.

Basic qualifications:
  • At least 3 years of experience (PhD and/or postdoc included) in the design, synthesis and characterization of novel materials, ideally for gas separation.

  • A strong foundation in chemistry or physics, with the ability to learn quickly and apply understanding towards innovation.

  • Demonstrated experience in communicating complex technical information to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Must have strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment.

  • Ability to work in dynamic environments to execute real-time tasks in tight operation windows.

  • Advanced degree in materials science, chemistry, or related technical discipline.

Preferred and experience:
  • Experience working on technically complex systems with experience from comparable industries like aerospace, automotive, or chemical engineering.

  • Hands on project experience designing and building products.

  • Comfortable working on a small team and taking ownership of all phases of a project lifecycle.

  • Requirements gathering and documentation for technically complex projects.
